Join us on the 51-mile Prairie Spirit Trail

You'll find parking areas, water fountains, restrooms and picnic shelters located 5 to 8 miles apart along the 51-mile trail.
Designed for non-motorized use, the surface of the Prairie Spirit trail is made of compacted crushed limestone screenings at least 8 feet wide to accomodate two-foot or bicycle travel. Built upon what was once the LL&G, then later became the Santa Fe Railroad, the Prairie Spirit Trail passes through 3 Kansas counties (Allen, Anderson and Franklin) and provides visitors with a variety of landscapes with ecellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
The trail is open during daylight hours and a permit is required for persons 16 years or older who travel the trail outside the city limits of Ottawa, Garnett and Iola. Trail users who only venture on the trail inside the city limits of those cities just mentioned are not required to possess a trail permit.
Permit fees: Daily - $3.50 Annual - $12.15
Daily permits can be obtained at self-pay stations located at trailheads located in Ottawa, Princeton, Richmond, Garnett, Carlyle, Colony and Iola. Annual permits can be purchased online at kdwp.state.ks.us or at the following locations:

Wal-Mart, 2101 Princeton Circle, Ottawa

The trail has gentle grades and is ADA accessible. Please note that at this time
the Pottawatomie Bridge north of Garnett is currently closed for repairs but will reopen soon.
