We're ending our sesquicentennial year with a "bang" and everyone's invited!  Mark your calendar and make arrangements for you and the ones you love to spend the last night of 2011 in Garnett, Kansas.  Activities are being planned on the town square leading up to the Ball Drop high above the Sesquicentennial Arbor (as shown below). Enjoy the fun as the pancakes fly and flip at the Chris Cakes breakfast at the fire station (freewill donation).  See below the fun we had.  Join us as we end this most memorable year, won't you?!

Free hamburgers and hotdogs & fixin’s – Garnett Fire Station, 132 W. 4th Avenue.  Enjoy this meal and social time with the community, served up by Garnett City Commissioners with the help of city employees and the Garnett Volunteer Fire Department.

MOVIE!  Weather permitting, an outdoor movie will be shown in the fire station parking lot! 

Saturday, October 8, 2011    All Day

7:00 a.m. – Community Breakfast at the Garnett VFW Post Home, 1507 S. Elm Street (Veterans Memorial Park/South Lake). Start your day off with pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, link sausage, biscuits & gravy, and Belgian waffles cooked to order!  Price:  $6/person (all you can eat!).

10:00 a.m. – Opening Ceremony – Stage at Sesquicentennial Arbor (Oak Street).

Garnett 150 Calendar Photographers Honored at City Commission Meeting

The Anderson County Fair held a special Garnett 150 photography contest during their July 26-31 fair.  Individuals winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place were:

1st Place:  Micci Aldrich - Bridge on Crystal (South) Lake
2nd Place:  Mary Anne Riehl - Avenue of Flags,Garnett Cemetery
3rd Place:  Mathew Cubit - Garnett Farmer's Market

The winners of the contest, along with contributors Connie Fagg and Doug Archer were recognized at the November 23, 2010 Garnett City Commission Meeting. The 2011 Garnett Calendars are now available for purchase for $5 at Garnett City Hall, Garnett Chamber Office, Garnett Public Library, Garnett True Value, Miller Hardware, Memiki Consignment and The Coffee Loft.  You can download an order form HERE.  Proceeds to help defray costs for Garnet 150 celebration activities.

Special thanks to the Anderson County Fair Association for organizing this contest.  The Anderson County Fair is planning another Garnett photo contest at the fair in 2011.  The development of another calendar will be dependent on positive sales of the current calendar.  Please purchase your calendar today to keep this project going!

LET'S CELEBRATE!

Mark your calendars and make plans to join in the fun as Garnett celebrates its 150th year as an incorporated city in Kansas.

 

BE A PARTCIPANT!  Enter your parade entry NOW!  DOWNLOAD PARADE ENTRY FORM 

Plans are being made to celebrate the 150th birthday of the City of Garnett on October 7 & 8, 2011.  There will be a freewill donation hamburger/hot dog community dinner at the fire station on Friday evening October 7th.  On Saturday, enjoy games, railroad memorabilia on display at the Santa Fe Depot, historical reenactments, exhibits, demonstration by The Wheelmen, walking tours, crafts, food and a huge parade on the town square.  Closing ceremonies Saturday night will include fireworks.  A list of entertainment and scheduled activities is coming soon. Watch this website for updated information as it is released!

 

The theme of the 150 Celebration Parade is REMEMBER WHEN.  The categories will be broken down into the number of years you can trace your roots back to Garnett/Anderson County, and are as follows:

                                    Commercial/Business, 0-50, 51-100 or 101-150 years

                                    Family, 0-50, 51-100 or 101-150 years

                                    Church or Non-Profit Organization, 0-50, 51-100 or 101-150 years.

                                    Youth bicycle/tricycle (no motorized)

                                    Mini float (8th grade and under)

 

Any business, family, organization or church located in Anderson County is eligible and encouraged to enter a float into the parade.  There will be cash prizes for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place floats in each category.
