Cedar Valley Reservoir

One of Anderson County's "best kept secrets" is tucked away in the country approximately 7 miles west of Garnett.  Boating, fishing, water-skiing, camping, nature watching, ATVing are just a few of the things you can experience and enjoy at this Garnett city-owned park.

Rustic yet convenient, Cedar Valley Reservoir is a great place to spend some time away from home.  Twelve campsites with electricity (no water) are available, or self contained or wilderness tent camping is also permitted throughout this park.  Campsites are on a first come, first serve basis.  A self-pay permit station is located at the park entrance.  Three floating boat docks and 3 boat ramps give
boaters options on
where to launch their vessels.  No city boat permit is required.  Kansas boat permit is required.

A designated area is availble to those that have ATV's.  City permits are required for anyone operating a motorized, non-highway vehicle at Cedar Valley Reservoir.

Pottowatomie Bridge Now Open on Prairie Spirit Trail

The floods of 2007 washed away the 1936 railroad bridge that crossed the Pottowatomie north of Garnett.  A new bridge has taken its place and is open for use along the Prairie Spirit Rail Trail.  The 51-mile hiking and biking trail runs from Ottawa to Iola, Kansas and passes through the Anderson County communities of Scipio, Garnett, Welda and Colony.

Celebrating 60 Years of Service to the Community in 2011
ANDERSON COUNTY HOSPITAL

Employee Reunion and Public Open House was held February 27, 2011

GARNETT, Kan. (Jan. 31, 2011) – On Feb. 1, Anderson County Hospital will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the hospital’s service to Anderson County.

Opening in 1951, Anderson County Hospital took nearly four years to complete and was considered to be one of the finest hospitals of its size in the state.

The Garnett Community Council proposed construction of the new hospital to the public in early 1947. Civic groups and the Anderson CountyPhoto courtesy Anderson County Historical Museum Medical Association overwhelmingly supported the addition of a community hospital and circulated petitions that authorized county commissioners to call a special election in October 1947. The proposal to issue bonds for construction and maintenance of a county hospital carried by a more than 2-to-1 majority on election day.

It was the desire of the board of trustees to establish a county institution that belonged to no specific locality or group of citizens, but was the property of all county residents and could serve the health care needs of the area for years to come.

Local organizations, including the Masonic Lodge, Delphian Chapter No. 44, the Vista Study Club and the Mary Gilfry Memorial Fund, provided funds to furnish the rooms. Bronze plaques bearing the donors’ names were placed on the doors of the rooms funded. The plaques remain to this day.

In 1995, following years of concern for the financial well-being of the hospital, the Anderson County board of trustees entered into a partnershipPhoto courtesy Anderson County Hospital with Saint Luke’s Health System. Saint Luke’s assumed responsibility for the employees and day-to-day operations of the hospital while the county maintained ownership and responsibility for the hospital building and all the capital equipment needs. The partnership has ensured the future of quality health care in the communities that Anderson County Hospital serves.

“Anderson County Hospital has been proudly serving the health care needs of the county for 60 years now and it is with great pleasure that we look forward to providing the best possible care for the next 60 years,” said Denny Hachenberg, Anderson County Hospital CEO.

Today, Anderson County Hospital is a 55-bed critical access facility featuring primary, emergency, acute and skilled care as well as comprehensive outpatient services. The hospital ranks in the top percentile of U.S. hospitals for patient satisfaction and is a leader in quality and safety initiatives.

Anderson County Hospital is a member of Saint Luke's Health System, which consists of 11 area hospitals and several primary and specialty care practices, and provides a range of inpatient, outpatient and home care services. Founded as a faith-based, not-for-profit organization, our mission includes a commitment to the highest levels of excellence in health care and the advancement of medical research and education.
